Viatris was formed in late 2020 through the merger of Mylan and Upjohn.
The company make products in therapeutic areas including oncology, infectious disease, women’s health, neurology and rheumatology.
Viatris employ approximately 38,000 people worldwide. It operates around 40 manufacturing sites for products including “complex dosage forms, injectables, oral solid doses and active pharmaceutical ingredients”.

The company employ approximately 1600 people in Ireland, in roles including manufacturing, engineering, R&D and commercial.

Viatris in Cork

The Cork API manufacturing facility was first established in 1978 by Plaistow. Over the following years, the site had several owners before becoming an Upjohn facility.
Ownership transferred again and the Little Island site became a Viatris facility when Upjohn merged with Mylan in late 2020.
The company currently employs over 200 people here in API manufacturing.
In July 2024, Viatris announced plans to close the Cork site. Operations will wind down over the next few years with full closure expected in early 2028.

There’s a Dry Powder Inhaler manufacturing site that employs approximately 300 people.
And there’s a Oral Solid Dose pharmaceutical manufacturing site in Damastown that employs approximately 320 people.
There are also 300 people employed in corporate roles within North Dublin offices.

In 2010, Mylan purchased the Bioniche Life Science vial and syringe aseptic filling facility.
In 2012, the company announced an annual investment of up to €76m for 5 years as it expanded both its Dublin and Galway facilities and by the end of 2015, the company had expanded the manufacturing, packaging, and quality control capabilities of the site.
The Galway site now produces two devices containing hyaluronic acid, in vial and syringe format. One is used to treat interstitial cystitis and one is used to treat muscular and skeletal inflammation and pain. These products are exported to countries around the world (but not the USA).
The sterile injectable manufacturing facility and the R&D site in Galway employ around 400 people in total.
