West Pharmaceutical Services design and produce packaging containment and drug delivery products for injectable medicines.

The company was founded in 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Herman O. West. Its first product was rubber plungers for dental cartridges.

Today, the company manufactures a range of products including seals and stoppers for injectable packaging systems and syringe and cartridge components. They work in partnership with many of the world’s top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

In Ireland, West Pharmaceutical Services operate 2 manufacturing facilities (one in Dublin and one in Waterford) as well as a Global Financial Services Centre.

West has had a manufacturing site in Damastown, Dublin since 2005. The facility offers a “single-source solution” by performing design, development, and manufacturing activities for their pharmaceutical and medtech customers. There’s also a global R&D facility within the site. In total, approximately 730 employees currently work here.

In November 2024, West announced 330 new jobs as a result of an expansion of its manufacturing facilities.

The company also has office-based operations in Blanchardstown, where approximately 90 employees carry out a range of global functions (such as finance and supply planning).

West’s Waterford manufacturing site officially opened in July 2018 after a reported investment of over $125m. The 20,500 square meter facility is a centre of excellence for West’s elastomeric laminate sheeting used in insulin pen injectors, as well as manufacturing other high-value finishing components.

In 2021, workforce numbers at the site rapidly expanded to help meet the increased demand for vaccine vial stoppers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
