What do you look for when sourcing Trainees?

Before a Trainee will be accepted on the Traineeship programme, they will all complete a Manufacturing Safe Medicines Foundation Short-Course (4-weeks). What are the Skills and Competencies we assess candidates for?

  • Attention to detail  - There are often many steps involved in a process and an employee must be familiar with the details of each. They must be able to follow SOPs closely and must observe all features of the cleanroom environment thoroughly.
  • Good Communication Skills - written skills are important to ensure clear documentation and verbal and listening skills are important to ensure efficient transfer of information between staff members. 

  • Good Computer Skills - much of the documentation processes is done via computer systems

  • Self Awareness - the ability to recognise when they are unable to solve a problem and elevate it to the necessary supervisor for assistance

  • Problem Solving - the ability to work through a problem to its solution using a variety of tools and resources at their disposal

  • Academic Abilities - this is tested through their ability to work through the programme materials and build a study schedule for themselves to master the materials

  • Self Discipline - students have the proven drive and determination able to successfully complete an online learning programme.

We use one centralised platform where trainees can log into their classroom 24/7. There students will receive their weekly programme materials and assignments, ask questions, reply to messages and more. This means:

  • Study is independent of shift patterns
  • Coursework is only 10 hours per week - manageable addition to workload

Professor Anne Greene is the pharmaceutical technology and pharmaceutical projects manager in Ireland, and is a Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Technolgy, Validation and Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance to undergraduate and postgraduate students at the Dublin Institute of Technology Ireland. 

In addition, she is also the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Secretary, Irish Chapter. Her experience ranges from a technical service chemist, Sterling Wintrop Dungarvan (now GSK), validation manager at startup Wyeth Newbridge (now Pfizer), and is Training Director at NIBRT in Ireland.

Professor Anne Greene, Lecturer, Dublin Institute of Technology

Dr. Joe Brady is a full-time practicing Validation Lead and assistant lecturer with the Dublin Institute of Technology, in the School of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Joe is a certified trainer and highly experienced in competency-based training. He designs and prepares educational modules and full academic programs ranging from MSc, MEngSc, BSc to Certificate level for a range of academic institutions. 

He is also a supervisor for MSc/MEngSc and PhD theses. Joe has over 17-years project expeirence in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and medical device industries in Ireland, Singapore, China, The Netherlands, France and the USA

The Level 7 BSc degree in the Manufacture of Medicinal Products (DT-291) has been accredited for an online delivery format. The modules are industry focused, covering the manufacture of safe and effective medicines to deliver the entry-level knowledge necessary to work in operator and technician roles in the BioPharma Industry. 

This is a 12-module BSc degree programme to be completed over a 4-year period:

Year 1:

Module 1 - Fundamentals of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technologies
Everyone will write a 3,000-word essay on “Why cGMPs are required for the manufacture of a life sciences product
A broad understanding of pharmaceutical manufacturing technologies, the rules that govern manufacturing and the guidelines on how these rules are applied, along with the risk management tools to be used when making decisions that could impact the safety of the medicines being manufactured.


Module 2 - Commissioning and Qualification of Equipment and Systems
Everyone will have to develop a 100+ page  IQ OQ PQ protocol for a Clean-in-Place system
Explains the engineering documentation used to specify and install new equipment systems in a manufacturing facility – and how to develop the test protocols (IQ, OQ, PQ) to ensure that it operates as intended and meets the regulatory requirements.

Module 3 - Chemistry for API's
Everyone will have to attend a Lab practical, completed lab reports and completed an online exam
Provides a foundation in the general chemistry necessary to appreciate the fundamental concepts involved in the chemistry of API required for the manufacture of medicinal products.

  • The Biopharmaceutical manufacturing process and its 3-stage process sequences

  • Generation, storage and distribution of pharmacopeia grade Purified Water
  • Generation of Clean Steam

What is involved in becoming part of the Traineeship initiative?

There is a five-step process to becoming a Partner Company on the BioPharma ManufacturingOperations Traineeship, which is outlined below:

1) Companies express interest to learn more about the Traineeship. 
2) Companies will be initially contacted by GetReskilled to explain Traineeship programme.
3) Meeting with GetReskilled to discuss company-specific details and the work-based-learning (WBL) elements.
4) Submit an application for Partner Company status
5) GetReskilled will review the application and confirm Partner Company status. Companies will approve GetReSkilled to inform potential trainees that the company has joined the Traineeship

Once a company has become a Partner Company, GetReskilled will provide a shortlist of potential trainees to interview. Partner Companies can interview the shortlisted candidates to find those who are the best fit for the company. Once the Partner Companies are happy with their decision, they can hire the chosen trainees and begin the Traineeship

1. Will trainees need time off to study during the year?
Trainees won't need any time off during the year to study as the course is part-time and completely online.
2. How will the training accommodate planned busy times throughout the year?
Trainees can pause their studies during busy times (either in their company or in their personal lives) and catch up during the summer vacation time. There is only 30-weeks of academic work a year to complete.
3. What salary package will the trainees be on?
This can be decided by the Partner Company on a case by case basis. We do have minimum salary guidelines which will be discussed and agreed before a company becomes a Partner Company.

5. How many trainees can I hire?
There is no maximum number. You can hire as many Trainees as you need as the programme can be scaled to fit each companies individual staffing requirements.
6. What is the minimum number of trainees that I can hire to qualify to be a partner company?
The minimum number of Trainees is 2 per company. 
7. What is the number of hours of study?
Each week the Trainees will have approximately 10-hours of online study to complete. 
8. How does this impact shift patterns?
Study will not impact shift patterns as Trainees can study during the days they aren't working and take the days they are working off. 
9. Will we have to pay all the fees up front?
No. The course fees are paid at the beginning of each year of the programme.
10. Am I liable for future fees if a trainee drops out? (i.e. fails exam but still employed)
No. If a Trainee drops out of the programme, the Partner Company is not liable for future fees.

11. What happens if a trainee leaves the company?
The Partner Company will not need to pay any future fees. The Trainee will need to find another source of funding if they wish to continue on the programme.
12. Do I choose my company’s trainees?
Yes. The Partner Company will be able to choose the Trainees that best fit into the company culture based on a shortlist of candidates provided by GetReskilled Talent
